6 tips to help you enjoy exercising again
Exercising is a lifestyle, but so many of us treat it like a chore. When you treat it like a chore, that’s when you start to lose motivation and fall off the bandwagon. It can happen to even the most elite athletes – sometimes it just gets too much, but it’s getting back into it that is more difficult. If you feel like I have just described you, then read on because I have listed 6 tips below to help you enjoy exercising again.
1. Don’t put any pressure on yourself
One of the things that can easily make a person fall out of love with exercising is unnecessary pressure. If you put too much pressure on yourself to achieve a certain goal, workout so many times a week or perform certain types of exercises for example, it can make exercise feel like more of a chore than a lifestyle choice.
If you want to start enjoying exercise again, try to not put any pressure on yourself to commit to anything. Try your best to remain motivated but exercise at your own pace.
If you really don’t feel like working out, then skip this session and think about how you can pick it up again at a later time in the week.
2. Start slow
This ties in with tip number 1 but is more focussed on routine. Routine is great as it keeps you motivated, but it’s important to start slow. Before you commit to a routine however, you will need to figure out what routine works for you and trial it. Remember this will take time. Try a few different routines out and see which suits your lifestyle the best. You will find that exercise is that much more enjoyable when you’re doing something that you can enjoy and not dread.
3. Prepare your playlists
I personally find exercise more enjoyable when I listen to music at the same time. It helps me focus and get in the zone and stops my mind wandering towards things that I don’t need to be thinking about whilst exercising. When you let your mind wander, you begin to realise there could be other things you could be doing with your time rather than forcing yourself to endure an exercise you don’t even want to do in the first place. Give yourself a break from day to day life and prepare a playlist that puts you in a positive mood, whether it’s old favourites or something upbeat that you can sing/mime along to!
4. Know your body
You may have an ideal goal in mind, but it is easy to forget that it doesn’t happen overnight. Everybody is different, and so (as an example) just because a friend has managed to lose weight quicker than you, don’t feel defeated. It doesn’t mean you can’t lose weight, but it might mean that you just have to work a little bit harder to achieve the same results. It can feel completely unfair, but it is just the way of the world and something that as humans, we just have to accept. Know your body, listen to your body and work with it. Have patience and remain motivated as much as you can, and you will see results.
5. Set small and achievable goals and rewards
Tying in with tip 1 and 4, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to achieve a certain goal in an unachievable amount of time. Have a rough goal and date in mind that you aim to achieve it by, but focus on smaller targets that are attainable. When you meet these, you will have more to feel proud about and then you also have an excuse to celebrate more often!
6. Find out what you enjoy
